Diabetes and Dental Implants

Posted by writeradmin

I have diabetes and need to replace a single tooth. I spoke with my dentist about it and he said that having diabetes is a contraindication for dental implants. If that is the case, what would you recommend as a second best option? Is there any way to preserve the bone when I can’t have an implant?

Donald

Dear Donald,

Dental Implant

While having diabetes does not mean that you cannot have have a dental implant, it does come with additional risks. In order to have a successful outcome, you would want to be monitored more carefully throughout and have careful diagnostic work done. Don’t let your dentist cut any corners.

As for what your dentist said, his response sounds more to me like your dentist is uncomfortable placing a dental implant with someone in your situation. Do not pressure him to go forward with the procedure. Even under ideal circumstances, this is an advanced procedure. There are countless dental implant horror stories. Instead, I want you to look for a dentist with expertise in the dental implant procedure. Dental school is not enough. They need to have post-doctoral training. Take a peek at Dr. Esposito’s training, such as her implant training from the Dawson Academy.

If you decide against the implant, the next best option would be a dental bridge. This does require the two adjacent teeth to have dental crowns placed and a false tooth will be suspended between the two teeth. With current technology, there is not a way to preserve the bone without an implant. This is more of an issue if you were losing a few teeth. In fact, those in complete dentures risk facial collapse if they do not protect their bone with implants. Right now, you’re dealing with one tooth, so you have some more leeway.
