Brown Spots on My Teeth

Posted by writeradmin

My teeth are extremely healthy, but unfortunately, there have always been brown spots on them my entire life. My mother said it had something to do with an illness I had while the teeth were developing. I told my dentist that I wanted to make them more attractive. She suggested we try teeth whitening. That didn’t seem to work like I was expecting. Would Zoom Whitening be better? I’ve heard it is stronger. My dentist doesn’t do Zoom, but am sure she would not mind if I went somewhere just to have this fixed.

Dear Lisa,

Person under zoom whitening light

I’m sorry that you went through the expense of the teeth whitening. Your dentist should have known that this would not solve your problem. While teeth whitening is a wonderful way to improve your smile in most cases, it will not work in yours. That is because it will whiten the entire tooth evenly. So the non brown parts of your teeth will get whiter along with the brown spots. This has the tendency to make them more obvious. Zoom Whitening will have the same issue so I do not recommend that you do that either.

There are other solutions. You didn’t say how widespread the brown spots were. If they are minimal, then I would recommend that you have dental bonding done. This is when a dentist puts a composite filling material in place of where the brown spots are. It’s often used to fix chipped teeth, etc. The composite can be made to blend in naturally with the remainder of your teeth.

If the brown spots cover a bigger surface area, then I recommend getting porcelain veneers. These will cover the entire front of the tooth and hug the side a smidge. This procedure is the go-to for smile makeovers and how celebrities get that Hollywood smile. It can change your smile completely, including the shape, size, and color, if that is what you want. The type of smile you get is completely up to you.

However, I don’t think your current dentist will be the best dentist to do either of those procedures. Both of these require extremely advanced cosmetic dentistry skills, that are learned in post-doctoral institutions. She didn’t have a good grasp of teeth whitening, which is the simplest of procedures.
