Can I Switch Dentists After Invisalign?

Posted by writeradmin

I finished my Invisalign treatment, which I loved. The problem I’m having is with the dentist. He will NOT shut up about politics the entire appointment. Going to a dentist is stressful enough without the political commentary, along with him expecting me to agree with him on everything. I’m supposed to be getting Invisalign retainers every few months. Could I switch dentists at this point or do I have to stick it out with him?

Dear Audrey,

Invisalign aligner

I am glad you wrote. You are allowed to switch dentists at any time. You could even switch when you are in the middle of a treatment. When that happens, your dentist is ethically obligated to provide whatever dentist you choose with all of his labs and notes.

It will be quite easy for another Invisalign dentist to take over. There is a great upside to using Invisalign that I’m not sure whether your dentist shared with you or not. The aligners can double as teeth whitening trays, which allows you to bleach your teeth while you are straightening them. Or, in your case, keeping your newly straightened teeth in place.

If you are in an area where there is not another Invisalign dentist, don’t stress. Just about any dentist should be able to provide you with a retainer, even if your dentist does not cooperate and share your dental records.

All that would need to happen is for your new dentist’s assistant to make a simple impression and send it to their dental lab. It’s not expensive. Invisalign can provide you with a clear aligner, plus you’ll have the teeth whitening advantage I mentioned above. If you can’t find an Invisalign dentist, they can make a retainer that attaches to the back of your teeth which no one will see if you want that.
